Today is Labor Day in France. We all met at about 8:00 AM for our bus ride to the ville de Giverny, home of artist Claude Monet and the beautiful gardens. Everyone appeared to be well rested this morning! Sacha Corriat - our BHS exchange student from Belgium last year who stayed with the Cluett family - surprised us there with her parents, and they joined us for the day!
At the Impressionism museum, our tour guide took us through the Impressionist Era and we saw many works from Renoir, Pissaro, and Monet, as well as two female artists - Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassat. We learned a lot about how these artists used children as their models, and how it was difficult to keep young children still for long periods of time.
We had our picnic lunch on the grounds of the museum and then had some time to explore the beautiful village (cafes, shoppes!), before gathering again for a tour of the unbelievably beautiful gardens! Many, many pictures to show off all the gorgeous flowers! One very impressive thing about these gardens is that for three seasons of the year, they are all in full bloom with seasonal flowers. Can you imagine what it takes to plan and maintain that? The end of the tour brought us through the home of Claude Monet circa 1800s with rooms full of his collections and works.
Perhaps you will receive something from the wonderful gift shop? Many of us shopped for quite a while! Back through the streets of Giverny, some stopped for a quick ice cream before hopping back on the bus for the ride home. Tyler discovered an inchworm and was determined to save it so the bus driver actually pulled over and he set it free! Now, at “home” we are all getting ready for our first day of school tomorrow. Students will be grouped together for different classes and will also have some study hall time to be working on BHS assignments!
Sophia and Sacha were reunited!
The view from Monet's bedroom window.
The grave of Claude Monet.
Thank you to Mr. Jaffré for the umbrellas, to Sophia G. for the May Day lilies of the valley, and to Sacha Corriat and her parents for the Belgian chocolates!!!
Apparently some tourists need this sign that Abbi found in the bathroom...
